UK speed limit signs explained

Small repeater signs remind you of the limit along a road. The national speed limit for cars is 60 mph on single carriageways and 70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways; limits are lower for vehicles towing and for some goods vehicles.

Quick answer

A number inside a red ring is the maximum speed allowed in miles per hour. A blue circle with a number sets a minimum speed. A white disc with a black diagonal stripe means the national speed limit applies, which depends on the type of road and vehicle. Zone signs mark areas with a lower limit.
